Rep. Obey: Punish the American people

I read this and re-read this statement from Rep. Obey and quite frankly I am stunned by Obey's suggestion that the American people be punished for the war.

A little context first- Congressman Obey is proposing that every single American be charged a surcharge on their income taxes to pay for the war in Iraq-

Three senior House Democrats proposed an income tax surcharge Tuesday to finance the approximately $150 billion annual cost of operations in Iraq, saying it is unfair to pass the cost of the war on to future generations.

The plan, unveiled by Reps. David Obey, D-Wis., John Murtha, D-Pa., and Jim McGovern, D-Mass., would require low- and middle-income taxpayers to add 2 percent to their tax bill. Wealthier people would add a 12 to 15 percent surcharge, Obey said.

What is not surprising is that these three senior Democrats want to increase taxes. That is standard practice from a Democrat.

What is stunning is that Obey is making it very clear that he wants to punish today's American taxpayers for the war in Iraq.

This following comment is the comment that I was stunned to read. Obey wants today's Americans to understand how much this war is costing.

By putting together this bill we hope people will stop ignoring what this war is costing American taxpayers and call the president's bluff on fiscal responsibility," Obey said.

In essence, punish the American people with taxes, so they understand how much this war is costing us.
