RE: Letter of Resignation from the DPW Administrative Committee
Dear Chair Wineke:
It has been my privilege to serve the Democratic Party for nearly two decades. I have worked on races from the courthouse to the White House. I have been honored to be elected to represent our values and our ideals. During this time, I have never publicly endorsed or worked on the campaign of any candidate who was not a Democrat.
I ran for State Treasurer in 2002 because of my belief that a change needed to occur in the office of the State Treasurer. I announced that I was running again because I felt more could be done. However, as you know, I decided earlier this year to pursue another avenue. I was so hoping the Democratic Party of Wisconsin would produce a candidate for State Treasurer who shares our commitment to Democratic values and the Wisconsin ideal. However, that did not occur.
Once again, we have nominated a candidate for State Treasurer who does not understand the office, does not campaign effectively, and will cause injury to the reputation of the State of Wisconsin and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. I can not and will not stand by without saying so.
However, I do not believe it is appropriate for a leader in the Democratic Party to endorse a Republican for an office in which there is a Democratic candidate. Therefore, effective immediately, I resign as Treasurer of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
In a few moments, I will release a press release endorsing Republican State Treasurer Jack Voight for re-election. He is not the best of two evils. He is clearly the best candidate on the ballot.
It was an honor to serve with you and the talented staff and members of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Administrative Committee. I will continue to be a Democrat and to vote Democrat, save this one exception.
